Real species, in the season and the place you would actually meet them.
Color them at home before your trip, and you will know them the moment you see them on the trail. Or slip the book into your bag and match what is blooming around you — the Pocket Notes at the back tell you which months to look, and which ground to look on.
Nothing here is invented. The petal counts, the leaf shapes, the way each plant grows — all of it is true to the flower, because that is half the pleasure of coloring something botanical. You look closer, and the drawing rewards you for it.
The book follows the year as the park does: spring, summer, fall, winter, and a closing section for the rare ones.

These are the cards I wish I'd had on my first visit. Each one shows the flower in color, tells you when it blooms and where it grows, and adds a fact worth knowing — that grizzly cubs dig up glacier lily bulbs, or that Indian paintbrush quietly steals nutrients from the grass beside it. Cut them out and take them with you.

Two that grow nowhere else on Earth
Yellowstone has flowers of its own — plants that live inside the park boundary and nowhere beyond it.
Yellowstone Sand Verbena — Abronia ammophila — holds on along the sandy shores of Yellowstone Lake, and nowhere else in the world. Sulphur Wild Buckwheat belongs to the Firehole River drainage, where it can carpet a whole hillside in yellow through the Upper, Midway and Lower Geyser Basins.

These are drawings of real plants, not decorative flower shapes. They reward slow, careful attention — and they are forgiving if you would rather go fast.

An hour with a pencil is the closest thing to standing at Dunraven Pass in June, with the whole meadow going yellow around you.
